Bring your kids to the Black Snake Creek Festival

There will be loads of fun and free things for your kids at the Black Snake Creek Festival (October 9 all day).

Free workshops - playdoh and origami.

Competitions - trivia and a colouring in competition with great prizes.

Skateboarding competition and demonstration.

Face-painting and roving entertainers will be there.

There will also be a show by the Fabulous Lemon Drops called "Everything's Gone Green."

Join us on a musical, environmental journey through the Australian bush. We will meet a variety of Australian animals, including a dancing frog and a rock 'n' roll koala while exploring some simple environmental themes. The themes include recycling, wildlife conservation and water saving, and are introduced through the stories of colourful animal characters and high-energy music.

Kite artist, Tony Rice will also be offering kite-making workshops for kids. Kids aged 5-12 can book on the day for $3 and create their own kite.

Black Snake Creek Festival 2010 (October 8 and 9) is hosting a new Fleece, Fibre and Patchwork competition this year. There are multiple classes of quilting and fibre as well as a special competition for fleeces from a 50 kilometre radius of Marburg.

Entries must be delivered to the Anglican Church Hall, Queen Street, Marburg, Queensland 4346 between 12 midday and 2pm on October 8, 2010. Entries are limited to two per person and items may not previously have been exhibited at the Black Snake Creek Festival.

Mining book successfully launched

The Ipswich City Council launched Seniors' Week today in Marburg. During the event, the new book about local mining from the Rosewood Scrub Historical Society was also launched. Councillor David Pahlke stood in for Mayor Paul Pisasale who was unable to attend. Councillor Sheila Ireland also attended.

Authors Bob Hampson and Wendye Gratton with some of the miners whose stories are in the book.

"Winning the Coal: Coal Miners' Stories from the Rosewood Scrub" is available for $15 from the Rosewood Scrub Historical Society. It's full of miners' stories as told by the miners themselves, with photographs of some of the local mines, historical mining equipment and an invaluable list of small local mines.

A good crowd gathered for the launch on a perfect sunny morning in Marburg.

Seniors' Celebration

The City of Ipswich is launching its Seniors' Celebration at Marburg on Monday 16 August. Mayor Paul Pisasale and Councillor David Pahlke will be in attendance.

Starting at 9am and running through to 1pm there will be:

* Free Morning tea and lunch
* A First Aid overview and CPR demonstration
* Tai Chi class
* Trivia Competition
* All day entertainment and activities
*Launch of the Rosewood Scrub Historical Society's new book - Winning the Coal: Coal Miners' Stories from the Rosewood Scrub.

Dinner music in the hall

First up this winter will be Shane Hauschildt on Friday 4 June at the Marburg Community Hall (corner of Edmond and Queen Streets, Marburg).

Playing with music

Two Marburg area residents are offering a music program for children aged 3-5.

Called Musicplay, it is designed for young children to introduce them to elements of music in a fun way. These activities include singing, dancing, percussion, glockenspiel, vocal expression exercises, theory...these are all great precursors to learning an instrument at a later stage.

Location: Rosewood Baptist Church Hall
When: Monday 9.30am and Friday 10am.

Cost: $8 per week plus a weekly levy of $50.

On Sunday 16 May the Rosewood Scrub Historical Society will have a special ‘Open Day’ to celebrate Heritage Week. The hall, in Edmond Street in Marburg, will be open from 10am till 4 pm. Everybody is welcome. Morning and afternoon tea will be offered.

The Heritage Faire to celebrate Heritage Week which is part of Brisbane’s Living Heritage Network, will be also be held on Sunday 16 May in Woodlands of Marburg, from 10am till 3 pm. The Rosewood Scrub Historical Society will, amongst many others, have a stall on this fair.

An invitation to morning tea

Did you know 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer before age 85? By taking part in a Morning Tea and donating, you can help support these people and their families. The money we raise will help fund Cancer Council research, prevention and support, including the Cancer Council Helpline, printed and online information as well as one-to-one and telephone support groups.

The Marburg & District Residents' Association would like to invite everyone to join our community based Morning Tea. We will be running a competition for the 'Most Unusual Cup' this year, with a $5 nomination fee for each cup entered - all proceeds to the Cancer Council of course!

Congratulations to the Marburg Firies

Marburg Firies participated in the South East Region Firefighting Championships held in Gatton on the weekend of April 18 and 19. Ten events were held showcasing their firefighting skills over two days. The team of four members had to demonstrate the drills as to how they would respond to a wide range of incidents on a daily basis. This team has been putting such a lot of effort into practicing for these events over the last few months.

After coming second in the Regional Championships last year, their extra effort shows through with them claiming FIRST place this time, and earning them the CHAMPION FIREFIGHTING TEAM OF THE SOUTH EAST REGION. After ten events, the team claimed 8 FIRSTS and 1 THIRD placing. The team of Brad Dance (Team Captain), Nick Doyle, Glen Looker and Steve Foote will now represent their region at the QFRS State Firefighter Championships in Townsville in August.

Marburg Show 2010

It's a real country show with animals, produce, craft, food and schoolwork competitions. There are horses, great food, carnival rides, music and events all day. You won't be disappointed.

Marburg Anzac Service will begin at 7:30 am at the Community Centre.

It will be preceded by a short march from the Skate Park - people participating will need to be ready to assemble at 7:15 am.

This year the service will include the unveiling of a World War 1 Honour Board with the names of Marburg war dead.

At the 2010 Ipswich Australia Day awards, several Marburg residents and the Marburg 2009 Black Snake Creek Festival were honoured by being nominated.

Alexandra Toft was nominated twice: for the award "Ipswich Australia Day Sportsperson Award" and for the "Ipswich Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year Award." She was the winner of the "Ipswich Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year Award." Congratulations Alexandra!

Susanne Ruys was nominated by David Pahlke of Division 10 for her work as member and secretary of the Board of Cabanda Care in Rosewood. Susanne received an Ipswich Medal for her many contributions. Congratulations Susanne!

The Black Snake Creek festival, represented by Barry Gratton, the president of the Marburg District Residents' Association which is responsible for the event, was nominated for the Ipswich Australia Day Community Event of the Year.

Music excitement in 2010

It is going to be another big year for music and events in Marburg. Band in the Park is back with the addition of an evening market at the Green e Shed with stalls, desserts and coffee on offer.

The first Band in the Park for 2010 will be Flatline. Their previously advertised concert was rained out in 2009 but they are back for another go on Friday 5th February.

Black Snake Creek Festival Art Awards

Thank you to everyone who attended the 2009 Black Snake Creek Art Show and the festival itself. The show opening was well-attended on a cool spring night. Warrego Winery wines, delicious finger food, bright young waiters and cheerful attendees all made for a delightful evening.

The judge for the awards was from the Ipswich Art Gallery.

The judging criteria were:

· Technical skill, craftsmanship, composition and execution

· Content’s relevance to local community

· Originality and creativity

In a statement the judge said that her personal bias was that she comes from a design background so naturally tends towards bold/graphic stylings. She added that "Also, in the interests of township harmony, have opted to share the prizes around, rather than award them to prolific repeat offenders."

Black Snake Creek Festival

Our Friday night program is about to make Marburg come alive with festive celebrations.

Free admission commencing at 6.30pm.

On of the main features of the evening is the Art Show awards and opening. We will have a great range and variety of art on display in the residents' building.

We will have live music all evening and this year we are thrilled to feature The Rivercity Steel Band from 8pm.

The Rivercity Steel Band started as a workshop run by the Australian Academy of Steel Drums. Our instruments, called Steel Pans, are formed from 45 gallon oil drums, traditionally made with a cannon ball and a log fire, now often with pneumatic machinery. The instrument originated in the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago, created by slaves who were allowed no other musical instruments. We play a range of music from popular songs to classical pieces to Trinidadian calypso, performing at markets and other functions. We are always on the lookout for new members, all you need is a sense of rhythm and fun! Check out our website at www.rivercitysteel.webs.com.

The Quilt challenge will be on display in the Anglican Hall with a great selection of traditional crafts.

This year we are featuring alfresco dining, with a great range of food to purchase. Also available will be wine sales and tasting , coffee and cold drinks.

It is definitely a great family night out and will help you unwind and prepare you for a fantastic Saturday in Marburg!

Firie update

This last weekend the Marburg Firies were competing again, this time in the Queensland championships. It was an exciting event for them with two out of the four team members having only been in the auxiliaries for about a year. Balancing this was Brad Dance’s 24 or so years of experience. Their goal was to finish in the top 10 places.

Out of 24 teams competing, Marburg placed 9th overall, which was a fabulous result and testimony to their hard work. They also ranked first in the SE & SW Queensland Region.

Ipswich City Council have recommenced community consultations regarding establishing a stables residential zoning adjacent to the residential area of Marburg township. A summary of action to date can be found on the Marburg community website.

This is a very important issue for the future of Marburg. The outcomes of this decision will determine the development of our town and its character and will impact upon our lifestyles. Please take a look at the information on the website and think about what it means for Marburg.

Marburg Firies Strut Their Stuff

14 teams competed over two days in June at the South East Queensland Firefighter Championships at Limestone Park in Ipswich. The teams all competed against each other during 10 different firefighting events. Each event is designed to test different skills that the firefighters are trained to use on the fire ground.

Honours from the hard-fought weekend went to Mt Tamborine Auxilliaries in first place, Marburg Auxilliaries in second place and third place going to Laidley Auxilliaries. These three teams will now compete at the Qld State Firefighter Championships to be held at Limestone Park in Ipswich on 6th, 7th & 8th August.

Team Marburg, consisting of Nick Doyle, Glen Looker, Steve Foote and Brad Dance are very happy with these results, but are planning to lift their training level to new heights to be able to be competitive against the best teams from over the state. So, if you’re passing the station and you see them training, give them a toot for encouragement.

Clean Up Australia Day

It's the time of year again to have a big clean-up of Marburg. Of course, as a tidy and friendly town, we try to keep the town clean all the time, but a special effort is made at this time of year.

As an aside, Barry Gratton, president of the Residents' Association, has taken it upon himself to keep the Rosewood approach to the town tidy all year around. If you see him picking up rubbish, stop and help out. Or you could adopt another part of town to look after. If everyone picks up rubbish or stops themselves from littering, it will make a big difference.

Please meet at the community hall on Sunday 1 March at 9.30am. Bring gloves and a lot of enthusiasm. A very warm day is forecast so don't forget the hats and sunscreen. Kids are welcome too.

A historical joke

In 1922 local GP Euchariste Sirois symbolically buried "Karl" on the range crossing to protest government inaction on road improvements. A stone was erected to highlight the plight of those using the road and Sirois wrote many letters to government and media pleading for the road to be fixed.

On 2 November 2008, Councillor David Pahlke, patron of the Rosewood Scrub Historical Society (RSHS) officially and with great good humour unveiled a stone and plaque to commemorate "Karl's Joke."

The stone had been preserved on the Zabel property and was donated to the historical society by Norm Zabel who assisted David with the unveiling.

The Rosewood and Districts Community Bank and the Ipswich City Council contributed funds to install this important historical monument outside the RSHS building on Edmond Street, Marburg.

Change is in the air

In addition to the usual bustle of preparations for the Black Snake Creek Festival, there have been a number of changes in Marburg recently. Two of the most noticeable changes have been the new post office and the new toilet facilities in the park.

For many years, the post office has been in the same building as Scotland Yard Antiques and Statham's Real Estate. Last week, it moved to the refurbished Blue Nurses building next door to the Marburg Hotel. The new postmistress is Jacquie Day. Drop in to see the new building and to have a chat with Jacquie and her sister, Karen who delivers the mail. Jacquie is expanding the range of products available and will be carrying a range of Australia Post gift items as well as items of local interest.

The new toilet facilities are a welcome replacement for what had become an eyesore in the park. Council has done a great job replacing the old block with a building sympathetic to the surrounding historical buildings.

Bands, bands, bands...

Excitement is building in Marburg as the annual Black Snake Creek Festival approaches. This Friday evening and all day Saturday will see downtown Marburg abuzz with activity and music. There will also be great food provided by the likes of the State School P & C Hamburger Stall. Come along to hear great music, see art and performances, view the street parade (starting at 11.45am on Saturday), eat great food, catch up with old friends and make new friends.

There will be music Friday night (October 10) and all day Saturday (October 11). Some of the bands featured include Fred Unplugged, One Day and Angelz.11. All of these bands are under the umbrella of Ernie Kuss Guitars: a sponsor of the festival, the Band in the Park series and a local identity.

Fred Unplugged is Glen on guitar and vocals and Rachael on drums. For higher profile events they are joined by Bec on bass guitar. Fred Unplugged is just one of those great acts that play a lot of 80 to 90’s rock favourites acoustically such as: Accidentally in Love, Don’t Go and many more. Not only are these talented locally grown musicians, but they are down-to-earth as well.

The band One Day is another great locally grown acoustic act featuring Rachael on guitar and vocals and Marcie on bass guitar with Justin stepping in for drums. Their style is uniquely smooth great Australian rock songs with a slight hint of country flavour.

Hold onto your hats, Angelz.11 is coming to town. This band rocks with Penny on vocals, Chaia on guitar, Haley on bass guitar and Danyel on drums. These girls play songs from the Chilli Peppers, Nirvana, Pink, Reef, Powder Finger and many more. It’s been a long time since a band has come along and recaptured the spirit of great rock. The future is looking good!

Go forth and revegetate...

Russell and Carol Yates have commenced a revegetation project on their property on the slopes of Two Tree Hill near Marburg. The property of 40 ha was originally part of the Rosewood Scrub and densely covered with dry rain forest but now has only sparse tree cover and has been heavily grazed over a long period.

With guidance and assistance from neighbour Bob Hampson, Russell has planted up a small area of rocky and eroded land in a corner of his property. Planting rows about 4 m apart were ripped and then sprayed twice with glyphosate at about 6 weekly intervals. A temporary fence using material already on the property was erected to exclude livestock until the trees are established. 200 trees of species indigenous to the Rosewood Scrub were purchased from Peter Bevan (Pete’s Hobby Nursery, Lowood) and planted about 2 m apart.

Russell and Carol received financial assistance for this project through the eTrees scheme. Information of this funding source can be obtained from Jean Bray of SEQ Catchments, Ipswich (3816 9722).

Congratulations, Bob and Narelle!

Bob and Narelle Hampson were acknowledged for their environmental work on their property in Schubels Road, Marburg at the 17th annual Ipswich City Council Awards for Excellence that were announced at a function in the Civic Hall on 19 August. These awards recognise individuals and corporations who are committed to promoting and producing excellence in the design of new development, the conservation of Ipswich’s built heritage, conservation of its natural environment and academically within schools.

Bob and Narelle were thrilled to be presented with a Gold Award in the Rural Greening category of the Environment Awards. Later, they were totally astounded when they received the Overall Environmental Award ahead of all other nominees in all categories.

Their philosophy in developing and a managing their property is well described in the following extract from their entry:

Development of our property is based on our strong affinity with the land, love of trees, and deep concern for the environment. We have a strong land care ethic and acknowledge a duty to pass the land to the next generation in a better condition to that in which we found it.

In 2000, we commenced development of our property of 24.28 ha (60 acres) which we purchased the previous year. It was run down and neglected with poor infrastructure and was heavily infested with weeds (principally lantana, African boxthorn, groundsel, Noogoora and Bathurst burr). Based on a sound property management plan, since then, we have:
• Cleared and continue to manage the weeds;
• Established a plantation of 10 ha of hardwoods (2001);
• Commenced revegetation of a gully with dry rainforest species (2002 - ongoing);
• Established a small plantation (400 trees) specifically for fencing material (2004);
• Revegetated an area of about 1 ha which is prone to erosion (2008);
• Planned revegetation of a further 0.8 ha which is also erosion prone in summer 2008/9.

Cattle are grazed conservatively to ensure good ground cover year-round and encourage desirable pasture species. Fencing has been constructed to facilitate land and pasture management and revegetation activities.

Our farm is a registered Land for Wildlife property. We are passionate about this and consider the effect upon wildlife of all of our land management activities.

We have hosted many field days and educational tours. Around 2 000 people have visited the property to learn about land management, farm forestry and revegetation.

The area around the house has been planted principally with dry rainforest species with the goal of providing food and habitat for birds and butterflies. The success of this is evident in that each year, around twelve different species of birds raise young within 10 metres of the house. In 2006, we were placed first in the native gardens category of the Ipswich garden competition.

We are thrilled that Bob and Narelle's hard work and commitment to the environment has been acknowledged by these awards. They are both involved with various revegetation projects around Marburg as well as a number of community groups. We (and our local environment) benefit greatly from having them as residents.

Do you know who was the 2008 Marburg Show Girl? You might have seen photographs in the Moreton Border News but they didn’t do justice to our own Rachel Dance.

Rachel is a familiar face at MDRA events as she is often the sound technician for Band in the Park. When she’s not at the controls, Rachel plays in a band that recently performed at the Resident’s myMarburg sausage sizzle. The band, “One Day” features Rachel on acoustic guitar and singing, Marcy on bass guitar and Justin drumming. In 2006, Rachel won the performance competition at the Black Snake Creek Festival and took home a new guitar. “One Day” has been a great inspiration to local girl musicians.
Rachel’s younger sister, Hayley (second from left below), also plays in a band “Angelz.11” which features Hayley on bass guitar, Chaia on lead guitar, Danyel drumming and Penny as the lead singer.

Both Rachel and Hayley went to Marburg State School and then Faith Lutheran at Plainland. Rachel finished school last year and is now studying youth development. Her mother, Lynelle, is an invaluable part of the team at Marburg State School and her father, Brad, is a stalwart on local committees such as the Show Society and the Auxillary Fire Brigade.

“One Day” and “Angelz.11” will both be playing at the upcoming Black Snake Creek Festival. We look forward to hearing the music and perhaps seeing some sisterly rivalry for the crown of best band at the festival.

A walk in the forest

You are invited to join the Rosewood District Protection Organisation for their Nature Walk #78.

High Eucalypt Forest

Mountain Scrub Road, Tallegalla

Saturday 2^nd August, 2008 Start: 8:00 a.m.

RDPO Nature Walk # 78 will take us up to the steep hill country on Tallegalla’s western border. It is three years since we last explored this part of the Rosewood Region, which is covered by rich stands of abundant eucalypt forest. Scenic mountain landscapes are also a feature of the area.

We will meet on Mountain Scrub Road past the cattle grid entrance to Lyne and Peter Marshall’s ruggedly beautiful property ‘Didgee Ridge’. We thank Lyne and Peter for making the walk possible and have invited them to be our guests.

Our plant and bird experts will guide us. Don’t forget to bring your bird and plant spotters’ species cards from last time if you have them. Cards available to newcomers before we start.

Directions:

From Rosewood: Take the Rosewood-Tallegalla Road for about 10 km towards Minden until you reach Woolshed Creek Road on left

From Warrego Highway: Turn off at Marburg. Take the Rosewood Road and turn right at the T instersection for Tallegalla and Minden. Drive until you reach Woolshed Creek Road on left (about 10 km from Marburg)

Then: Turn left into Woolshed Creek Road, drive for 2-3 km and then turn right at the sign up the steep rise of Mountain Scrub Road. Drive carefully. The grid is about 2 km along, and we will meet about 300 m past it on the roadside.

The judges' decision

Today was the announcement of the Tidy Towns winners for the Inland South East Queensland area. While Marburg did not win the award for the tidiest town, it did win in three individual categories. Marburg is now officially the Friendliest town in inland South East Queensland. Marburg also won awards for bush spirit and for its high levels of community partnerships.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale extended special congratulations to the "Ipswich community of Marburg which collected three awards in their own right."

He said that "It is tremendous to see the community spirit shown by Marburg and district residents and they should be extremely proud of their strong showing in this year's awards. Marburg residents are very passionate about their town and its history and were keen to share that with the rest of Australia through their entry in the Tidy Towns Awards."

Mayor Pisasale was also pleased that Ipswich won the award for the Tidiest Town.

Congratulations to everyone in Marburg who worked so hard on this project. It would be wonderful if we could continue the effort to keep the town tidy.

Thanks must also go to Councillor David Pahlke for all his efforts on our behalf and Ipswich City Council for nominating us and supporting our campaign.

Band in the Hall

Our winter series of music continues with Band in the Hall on Friday 4 July at 7pm.

Fred Unplugged will be performing.

In the hall there will be a three course dinner along with music.

The price is $25. Bookings are essential and can be made by calling 5464 4309.

Funds raised will be used to support local community initiatives.

Organised by the Marburg & Districts Residents' Association and sponsored by Erny Kuss Guitars and the Marburg Hotel.

Tai-chi

Meet in the sunshine under the trees at the park (corner of Edmond and Queen Streets, Marburg) for a morning Tai-chi class. It is held on Wednesdays at 9am and lasts for an hour. A gold coin donation is encouraged. All are welcome.
